How "Disco became "Da Club"

For those who are old enough to recall the days when going out dancing meant going to a "Discotheque" or as we recall "The Disco." Growing up in New York City in the 70's, the club scene was amazing with various clubs competing to be the city's best. If you were lucky enough to get in, the atmosphere was something that you never experienced. Being in my late teens, I was used to house parties and the shift to being "downtown" was viewed as a rite of passage from boy to man.

Putting on what I thought was my best gear, did not always guarantee you entrance into the disco. I remember standing in line and getting a thorough review from top to bottom to see if I qualified to get in. I would keep my fingers crossed, hoping and praying that I pass inspection, and get the opportunity to get in. Once inside, it was far different from any other party you've been to in the past. The men strutting around in expensive suits looking important, and the women, jaw dropping, every last one of them. Backgammon and chess boards, scattered around for a look and feel of sophistication. If you were on the" up and up" and wanted to be viewed as somebody, you made it your point, to be at the disco.

I guess "Da Club" is the reincarnation of the disco, and I would imaging that although times have changed, the same pretentiousness continues, what do you think?

Da disco and da club are the same thing - just think of your 386 computer and your latest apple laptop. You thought that the 386 was the hottest thing ever when you got it. 20 years later, you realize that DOS is old and slow. Haay... well maybe that didnt come out the way that I intended... but you get the drift. Sock hops segued into discos... then into clubs....then into... who knows :)

The comparison is indeed related in a sense that back in the 70's I thought the disco was the hottest thing. I don't really think that people who go to Da Club these days, have that same wide eyed image that I had when I first started going to the Disco. I think, and this is just a thought since I have not been to any of these clubs, that these patrons come with attitude already formed. Perhaps the music and videos help prepare you before you get there, I don't know what do you think?

Definitely, today's "youth" is anything but wide-eyed. Will that make their club experience any less exciting when they finally cross the velvet rope? I guess so. There's no novelty... their loss.
